Learning Outcome #4: Work Collaboratively with Others

CAS

Raising and Taking Down the Flags

What: Every week me and a partner respectfully and formally raise and take down the California and American flag. We raise it every morning and take it down after school. On windy days it is extremely difficult to accomplish this on my own so i have to had to learn to work with my partner.

Why: No one would ever sign up to bring down the flag so I decided to help my school out and partnered up with a fellow student named Jesus to complete those duties.

How: Each morning me and Jesus take down the flag and fold it in the triangle method because it is the formal way of folding a flag. We also raise the flag at the beginning of school in order to comply with the schools regulations.

Value: By working with Jesus, i colloaborated with him so well we became very good friends. Also it felt good providing a simple service that relieves teachers to do things that take up more time.

What I Learned: I learned that working well with someone can lead to helping other and building relationship at the same time.

Learning Outcome #3: Plan and Initiate Activities

CAS

IB Retreat

What: The IB retreat is an event that is held every year at school where the second year IB students hold a retreat for the first year IB students in order to make them feel comfortable and initiate their start in the IB program. The seniors plan the event and attempt to create relationships with the juniors in order to immerse them into the IB lifestyle and allow the juniors to ask questions about the IB program.

Why: The reason i chose to be part of this retreat was to make the juniors feel as welcomed as i felt when i went on my retreat as a junior. I also wanted to make sure the juniors knew what they were in for and the long hard work that lay ahead of them. I was always good at planning activities, especially in terms of sorting out where the meals would come from. This is why i undertook the chief duty of bring snack, beverages, and meals.

How: The retreat was to take place on the weekend on school grounds. The seniors set up all the activities abo0t two weeks prior to the date of the retreat. We established we would hold some icebreaker activities in which everyone would share a little something about themselves. Then we took them on a scavenger hunt after we held a Q and A session between the juniors and the seniors. The last activity was the egg drop activity where the task was to make sure an egg did not crack after a large fall.

Value: This activity was valuable because it allowed for new relationships to form and allowed me to do a good thing for the juniors by answering their inquiries. The activities also allowed some IB students to open up a little more about themselves.

What I Learned: I learned how difficult it was to plan an entire activity, solely with the work of the senior IB class. However, i always learned that this hardwork had a great payoff in helping our fellow under classmates and allowing us to build relationships with them.

Learning Outcome #2: Taking on New Challenges

CAS

Adopt-A-Grandparent

What: The Adopt-A-Grandparent program is a school organized group who takes students to the Country Villa to interact and keep the senior patients company during their recreation time. Around 20 students go every other Friday and spend time with the residents.

Why: The program exists to provide caring relationships and interactions with the senior citizens who most of the time have minimal contact with their loved ones. I decided to do the program because I had always had a great relationship with my grandparents and i learned to value the wisdom and history they had to pass down, which is something that many of the senior citizens at Country Villa were not able to do.

How: Each student can drive to the retirement center in their own car or along with the coordinator, Mr Arenas. The students then remain the the recreation room and talk to the residents along with playing board games and bingo. My favorite game to play was Connect Four with one of the residents named Roger. He was in the military and loved to tell me about when he got his Marine tattoo. These relationships we build not only make the residents feel good but us as well.

Value: The program is valuable to me because speaking with someone is not always easy for me, especially with people i don't know. But after gaining the relationships i did, the program was without a doubt worth facing the challenge of meeting someone new.

What I Learned: I learned that having a relationship with someone, no matter how small is important to every single individual. This is why the program i participated in was a great experience in learning to be open with a senior.

Learning Outcome #1: Increase Self-awareness of Personal Strengths and Areas for Growth

CAS
Learning a new instrument

What: I bought a 5-piece drum set without ever having learned how to play a percussion instrument. I gradually acquired skills and technique while teaching my self to play the drums.

Why: Since around the sixth grade, one of my music teachers instilled in me the importance of the arts. I was immediately attracted to music and i began to take lessons for violin and guitar. I realized i had a sense for rhythm and musical ability and this boosted my self-confidence. It was not easy at first and at times it was even painful; to the point where i began to accumulate blisters and chalices on my fingers. When I bought the drums, I wanted to prove to myself that i could learn such a complicated and difficult instrument on my own. Just like when i learned to play guitar, I received some injuries in learning to play, such as hitting my hand with a drumstick or hitting my eye. However, my drive to learned an instrument that i enjoyed more and more each practice continued through out the experience and it proved to be worth it.

How: The key thing to learning an instrument is to brush up on the background of the instrument and observe the technique of other drummers. However, I had to learn basic rhythms and drum patterns before moving on to more difficult techniques and skills. As I progressed and learned to play along enough skill to compose my own drum patterns.

Value: As i explained before, music has always been a vital part of my life and learning a new instrument was like further dwelling into what could be my vocation. Music is not simply a hobby to me, but a way of expressing my worth and the hard work i put into what i do.

What I Learned: What i learned from learning to play the drums was the importance of determination and how even though i am a better musician that i was a year ago, I still have a vast amount of improvement and growth that i can accomplish and i plan on doing so. This drive not only applies to learning a new instrument but has also flowed over into my other activities such as exercising and my academics.
