IB Retreat
What: The IB retreat is an event that is held every year at school where the second year IB students hold a retreat for the first year IB students in order to make them feel comfortable and initiate their start in the IB program. The seniors plan the event and attempt to create relationships with the juniors in order to immerse them into the IB lifestyle and allow the juniors to ask questions about the IB program.
Why: The reason i chose to be part of this retreat was to make the juniors feel as welcomed as i felt when i went on my retreat as a junior. I also wanted to make sure the juniors knew what they were in for and the long hard work that lay ahead of them. I was always good at planning activities, especially in terms of sorting out where the meals would come from. This is why i undertook the chief duty of bring snack, beverages, and meals.
How: The retreat was to take place on the weekend on school grounds. The seniors set up all the activities abo0t two weeks prior to the date of the retreat. We established we would hold some icebreaker activities in which everyone would share a little something about themselves. Then we took them on a scavenger hunt after we held a Q and A session between the juniors and the seniors. The last activity was the egg drop activity where the task was to make sure an egg did not crack after a large fall.
Value: This activity was valuable because it allowed for new relationships to form and allowed me to do a good thing for the juniors by answering their inquiries. The activities also allowed some IB students to open up a little more about themselves.
What I Learned: I learned how difficult it was to plan an entire activity, solely with the work of the senior IB class. However, i always learned that this hardwork had a great payoff in helping our fellow under classmates and allowing us to build relationships with them.
